The "Politics and development in Africa and the Global South" Course is a course in political science research; it focuses on the analysis of contemporary issues in southern countries.  It prepares students for professions in the fields of research, consultancy, expertise, and decision-making support in public organizations, private companies, and the third sector. The course combines theoretical and methodological approaches and empirical experiences, using the resources of the LAM and its professional contributors.

Knowledge and skills

This class aims to further develop students’ knowledge of situations they have selected, by constantly confronting theoretical hypotheses with other case studies. The combination of a good theoretical and methodological training with, on the one hand, a very precise knowledge of the themes and developing areas, and, on the other hand, comparative skills, is at the heart of the pedagogical project of this class.

The training course is built around a common core including training in the theories and methodologies of political science and social sciences, a core course in geography, thematic classes, and two specializations "careers in research and expertise" and "careers in decision-making support and consultancy".

The course aims to train students to become professionals specialized in the analysis of African countries and the developing world, i.e. specialists with empirical skills in these areas, effective theoretical and methodological tools, and specific thematic skills. The students are systematically encouraged to perform internships in organizations and in the field from the fourth year onwards. The course combines university lectures and interventions by professionals specialized in “Southern countries”

Many of the classes are delivered in the form of seminars and students are given specific assignments through which they will develop special skills in risk management, policy intelligence, and theoretical research. Learning the main languages spoken in Africa (European and African) is encouraged.
